Greetings Folks,
Great news! Our good
friend, and newest member, Johanna Schroer has agreed to get our web site back
up and running! She already has many plans to improve the appearance and
usefulness of the site. At this months meeting we will be talking about what
you would like to see on our site as well as any suggestions you have to make
it a sight worth going to.
One very important
question related to our sight is the address. Right now our site is on
Tripod.com. This is a free site. But the cost of being free is all the
advertising that goes along with it. Johanna has looked into it and we can get
our own site, like pittpounders.org, for $85 per year. Do you think that we should pay for our own web site? Please
consider what you think the benefits are to having a web site, and plan on
sharing them at this months meeting.
With our show coming next year and all the advertising we are/will be
doing for it, we need to make this decision ASAP.
With a web site or not,
we are still making good use of the internet. Our newsletters are sent to many
folks via the net, saving the guild lots of $$. If you arent currently
receiving your newsletter as an email, would you please consider doing so? Its
simple, just let myself or Draper know, and youll be added to the list! Just
like Fransie Bradford of Lanoka Harbor, NJ and her father Philip Roets of
Apollo Beach, FL were. These two folks have been working with leather for about
two years now. Philip fell in love with some of the artwork he saw done on leather while in South
Africa. Now they are experimenting with the best ways to combine leather work
with the wood carvings that Philip is very good at. I havent seen any of
Philips work yet, but Fransie shared a photo of a Chickadee on a pine branch
that she won a Best in Category with at a local show last year, and it was
very deserving of the prize. Its great
to share photos and information with people all over the world with the
internet.
Speaking of sharing ideas
and the internet, lets talk about the International Federation Of Leather
Guilds Show that we will be co-hosting here next year along with the good folks
from the International Internet Leather Guild. We would like to do some
advertising for the show in our local area to let as many people as possible
know the who, what, when and where of things. Many of you will remember the
great turnout we had at our first show at the Butler Days Inn. All day long
Saturday there was a steady stream of people coming through, checking us out
and asking questions. I think a lot of peoples eyes were opened to some of the
possibilities of this beautiful medium we work with. We even got a few new
members because of the show. We would
like to see and even bigger response to the 2006 show. What we need from you
are: What publications would you
recommend advertising in? And, What
does it cost to advertise in them? Please bring this information with you
to the meeting.
Also, the theme of the
show is Harvest Of Leather. Peggy has
purchased 30, wicker cornucopias to be used as centerpieces. The idea is to have the cornucopias stuffed
with small leather projects to be given away at the banquet. What we need are
people who are willing to donate 30 pieces of some small item. We already have
some folks making mystery braids and key rings, but that gives you and idea of
what we are looking for. Interested?? Let me know! Thanks.
Another thing we have talked about at the
last few meetings is that we have accepted the offer made by our friends in the
Buckeye Leathercrafters to meet them at
Roscoe Village, in Coshocton, Ohio,(about 2 ½ hrs away) on June 18th.
There will be plenty going on that day as it will be the weekend of their
26th annual Heritage Craft Olde Time Music Festival. This will replace Junes regular guild meeting.
Just like last year, a picnic area has been reserved which will seat up
to 70 people, so this get together is open to every member and their families.
The members of the Buckeye Guild will provide the hamburgers, hot dogs, buns
and paper goods. As well, each of their members will bring a dish to pass and
their own beverage. Each of us is asked to bring a dish to pass as well as our
own beverage. Those of us who went last year really enjoyed ourselves. I encourage
each of you to consider joining us this year. We will need to know who is going
so that we can arrange where and when to meet, who will be driving and all of
those details. If you have any questions, bring them with you to the meeting or
get in touch with me one way or the other. Both my email and phone number can
be found on the front page.
And for those of you
who dont attend meetings regularly, for whatever reason, your opinion is still
very important to me. Let me know what you are thinking. About the show,
the newsletter, the web page, the meetings, whatever. If you like how things
are going, let me know. If you have some constructive criticism, let me know
that as well. Its hard to change things you dont realize are broken. This
guild is made up of a bunch of Great people. Only with everyones input can we
achieve great results.
One other quick note
about this months meeting. Many of you know that Jennifer and I have had the
privilege of going to Mexico City and being part of a team that offers medical,
dental, optical, and hair care services as well as childrens ministries to
those who literally live in the garbage dumps, as well as other small
communities. Once again this year we will be returning, along with eight other
members of our church. The reason I am telling you this is because some of the
missionaries we will be working with in Mexico will be in Zelienople the day of our meeting so that our team can
meet them and we can all get to know one another better now, so that we can serve
better in July when we are there. So I will be at the meeting. I will just be
late. So come ready to do some tooling as Draper will continue to share from
his wealth of knowledge. (Ill bet you cant ask him a leather related question
that he cant answer. Go ahead, try!), And make sure you come ready to talk
about the web site, advertising for the 06 show, the picnic with our friends
from the Buckeye Guild and more!
I look forward to
seeing you there!
Your
Friend,
Christopher
