Greetings Folks.
Spring
has finally arrived! Yeah! And with the warmer weather comes thoughts of
picnics and get-together’s, right? (Besides all of the yard work and getting
the mowers ready, and re-mulching and planting and……) So get out your calendars
now and put a big red circle on June 18th.
That is the day we will be getting together with our friends from the Buckeye
Leather Guild. We will be meeting in the same location as last year: Roscoe
Village. If I recall correctly, it took us about 2 ½ hours to get there. And
once again we will be car-pooling and sharing the cost of the ride. As well as
sharing plenty of lively conversation along the way. More details will follow,
but I do hope that you fit this into your schedule. Not only did we have a
great time last year, with plenty of good food and fellowship, but this will be
our meeting for the month of June as well.
As
you read this newsletter, our friend and IILG member, Maria Haddock, is busy
putting together the show packet for the 2006 International Federation Of
Leather Guilds annual show, which we will be co-hosting here along with the
International Internet Leather Guild. And as she is doing that, another
opportunity for a few of you to get involved in the show has surfaced. What we need is someone who would be
willing to take care of all of the Show/Banquet Registrations and monies sent
in. As well as someone to take care of the Competition Entry Forms, tags and
pieces sent in for competition. If
you are interested or would like more information, please get in touch with me
(Chris Kearns) as soon as possible. My email address and home phone number can
be found on the front page of this newsletter.
Every
month for the past year or so you have been reading about the 2006 show. It is
exciting to have the opportunity to host this show. But you know as well as I
do how much work it takes to make a show like this a success. That is why we
try to keep you up dated and give you the chance to be part of it all. In fact,
we couldn’t do it if it weren’t for all of you who are helping out now, and all
of you who plan on helping as the show gets closer! Thanks for your
participation. And if you want to help but you don’t know where or what to do,
just ask! Either myself or Holly Moore will be happy to put you to work!
Hey,
are you planning to go to the Colorado Round-up? That’s this years IFOLG Show,
hosted by the Columbine Leather Guild, September 30-October 2nd. If
you are I sure hope you are ready to learn some good stuff. They have put
together one heck of a line up of teachers! Here is part of a note we received
from Len Rothfeld of the CLG:
We and Carol Higgins have lined up an outstanding group of instructors for this year's mini-workshops. We have commitments from two who have never taught at an IFoLG show before -- Pete Gorrell and Barry King – and three who haven't been at IFoLG for a long time -- Rene Berends, Tony Laier and Peter Main. Carol has eight more popular instructors: Carol Gehrman, Dale Grabowski, Tom Hall, Roz Kaohn, Edd Lucas, Nita Pickering, Ron Ross and Andy Stasiak. There'll be fifteen mini-workshops in all, three each onFriday morning, afternoon and evening and Saturday morning and afternoon. Two pre-show workshops are planned for those who can stay longer: a three-day class by Bob Beard, and a two-day session by Bill Gomer. In addition, two special free workshops will take place during the show. Bill Gomer and Tony Laier plan a short workshop on judging, for prospective judges and for anyone who wants to learn more about how competitionEntries are judged. Jim Linnell will lead a free workshop for area youth and 4H leaders.
That is
one outstanding lineup of talent! Which brings up another opportunity to be
involved in the 2006 show: We need
talented leather workers who are willing to share their skills at our show. Interested?
Let me know. Not only will it benefit our show, but it benefits the future of
this craft we love. (Just a little side note; Kevin Cohn has been in touch with
some folks at the Boy Scout center in Pittsburgh. They have let us know that
they will be happy to send out the information on the show that we supply them
to all of the area Boy Scout Troops as the show gets closer. They have asked
for 600 fliers! Way to go Kevin!) So if
God has blessed you with skills and abilities related to leather, please do
consider sharing them at our show. You never know what the person you are
teaching will do with those skills.
Speaking
of sharing skills, Draper will continue to share some of his wealth of
knowledge at this months meeting. So make sure you bring your tools and
supplies and are ready to learn! Also, we had talked at the meetings of doing
some figure carving after Draper finishes his classes, and we were thinking of
doing a songbird. But as so many of the members own or have owned horses, maybe
we can wait on a songbird. At last months meeting I brought in a selection of
some of the horse head carving I have done in the past, and there was much
interest in the embossed ones. Since it has been awhile since we taught
embossing, perhaps that is what we will be doing next: an embossed horse head.
If that sounds like something you would like to learn, stay posted.
Well
folks, get out and enjoy this weather. But don’t enjoy it so much that you
forget to come to our next meeting! I hope to see you there.
