October – November Meetings Christmas Project

Last month we started making a door hanger with bells.  We went over some of the measurements and things to keep in mind when laying out the design.  This month we will attempt to finish the project.

To save time, it will be appreciated if you can bring your finished leather strap to the meeting. We can help you with finishing advice, but I will not have any type of dyes or finishing supplies with me.

You will need the following items to complete the project:

  1. The bells and hardware have been ordered and should arrive the week before the meeting.  I will bring the items with me.
  2. I will also have the pins to hold the bells on the strap, a pair of needle nose pliers to bend the pins, Chicago screws for members who want to use them in the assembly, and some rivets.
  3. If you have Chicago screws and rivets for your project, please bring them with you.
  4. If you have decided to sew the straps for assembly, you will need to bring your sewing materials.
  5. I will also bring bag punches in ½, 5/8, and ¾ inch sizes to punch the holes to mount the bells, round punches for the rivets and Chicago screws, and tools to set the rivets.

If you have your leatherwork done, we should be able to assemble the straps in less than an hour unless something goes wrong.  This time will not include time for sewing if you choose to sew your assembled strap.

I have ordered extra bells and will have them on hand for members who were not able to make the October meeting.  These will be available on first ask first get basis.

          ABOUT THE IFOLG SHOW,

                                      A  LETTER FROM DAVE SMITH

WOW, what a show! Lone Star has raised the bar once again. Under the guidance of George Hurst, we have pulled off the best IFOLG Show I have ever attended. We set a record for the number of competition entries, hosted 18 exhibitors, and had well over 275 leather crafters in attendance Our attendees were from several countries and all over the United States. We were the first guild to host the World Class Open competition. Judging by the number of entries, it was very well received by leather crafters. Our own Terry Henson won second place in the World Class Open with his saddle that he described as “just an old working saddle.” Yeah, sure Terry. Then there was Carl Suvaco. His saddle not only won a First Place ribbon and Best of Category, but it also won Best of Show. Congratulations to our two guild saddle makers. Very well done! Now,  ow about the rest of the guild members that entered the IFOLG competition.

While the awards were being given out, it almost seemed that every other one went to a Lone Star member. Well, maybe it wasn’t quite that many, but it seemed like it. Congratulations to all our members that placed in the competition. No matter if you got a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, a Best of Category, or didn’t get a ribbon at all, each and every one of you is a winner because you entered a piece in competition. Congratulations to the Columbine Guild for winning the Guild Trophy. Ya’ll be sure and take Until next time, keep on toolin’...

A LETTER FROM  JOHANNA

Draper asked me to write about the IFoLG show last month.  By my figuring, it was my 11th show in 15 years.  Have you ever been to one of these shows?  Every year, the International Federation of Leather Guild member guilds take turns hosting a show.  This year, the show was in Ft. Worth, Texas, and sponsored by the Lonestar Leathercrafters Guild.

If you looked at the pictures in the links I provided last month, you will see just how many people participate in the competition and displays at these shows.  The contests are friendly, but the judging is strict.  It has to be, because this is the only competition of its kind in the world for hand made leather items.  There are three divisions in the entries:  Open, Advanced and Masters.  People can bring their work and enter it in person, or send it to the host guild with return postage.  Entry fees are minimal, and designed to recoup expenses.

This year's show was held in the same hotel as the 1997 show, the Green Oaks Hotel.  As I type this, the hotel has probably been bulldozed.  All of us that complained about the hotel were told that it was scheduled for demolition in two weeks, and there wasn't anything to be done about the problems.  Most people packed up and went across the street to the newer hotel there.  Yes, it was that bad.  However, it didn't stop us from having a good time!

This show wasn't attended as well as some years past, but many old friends were there, and I had a chance to put faces with familiar names.  The vendors area was well represented.  There were toolmakers, and Tandy, Hidecrafters and Artisan, and Paul Burnett of Painting Cow and Marlin Knives were there, too.  Roz Short, the Dragon Lady, had a terrific display of her artwork set up.  With her art, the more you look, the more there is to see.

The guild display tables were dressed up and full.  I took lots of pics of this room, and the competition room, and they are posted on leatherworker.net.  The competition room was open to the public early Saturday morning.  As usual, there were one-of-a-kind pieces everywhere!  It is fun to go through the room with all items wearing their closed tag, and try to figure out who did what.  At the banquet Saturday night all the winners are announced, and you can see how close you were to identifying the artists to their work.  The tags are closed on purpose for the competitors' privacy, because the judges often enter comments and suggestions of how to improve on the tags.  The awards banquet is when the ribbons and applause are dished out.  There were a few surprises, but everyone got the recognition they deserved.  After the banquet there is a traditional swap meet and all-night tooling session.  The delegate meeting was early Sunday morning, and then people started to pack up and go home.

Lonestar put on a good show despite all the new changes in the Hidecrafter situation.  (Hidecrafters has been sold, and George Hurst is semi-retired now.)  See you next year in Columbus, courtesy of the Buckeye Leathercrafters Guild!
