COMING EVENTS;
2008 IFOLG SHOW SEPT 26
– 28,
H I FOLKS;
There will be NO MEETINGS IN JULY & AUGUST. Our next regular meeting will be September 21st. This will be one week before the International Federation Of Leather Guilds Annual Show. Although gas prices are affecting all of us, with the show being held at the Columbus Airport Marriott, it’s a great opportunity for all of us to make the short journey for such a fun, memorable & learning experience. Besides all of the good people from the Buckeye Leathercrafters who will be hosting the show, leather workers from far and wide will be there as well. So if you are interested in car-pooling and/or room sharing, please give Chris a call at: 724-816-3901, anytime before 7:00 pm.
And for those of you who can’t attend, Dave Briggs has graciously offered to take any competition entries to the show for you.
DUES ARE DUE.
If you haven’t already, please send your dues to:
Joyce Wedge
We are hoping to have everyone’s dues in by the end of July, and here is why: In order to enter the competition at the IFOLG Shows you must be a member of a guild that is a member of the IFOLG. And as a member guild, we have to send a list of our members to both the host guild & the IFOLG a month before the show. So please send your dues in NOW so that we can get our membership list together and sent out. Thanks!
One of the things we have been discussing at our meetings for months is our guild display sign. A number of suggestions have been made as to ways to update it. The idea that was settled on was to cut a piece of leather into the shape of our state, then cut that into pieces roughly following the outline of groups of counties. Well, thanks to Dave Briggs for donating the piece of leather and to Chris Kearns for the cutting, we ended up with 17 pieces of assorted sized leather. What we are asking is for each member to take a piece or two and carve/tool/paint or whatever it is you do to leather, so that when it is all put back together, our guild sign will reflect the work of it’s members. Just so you know, 6 of the pieces are already gone, so if you are willing to be part of this, please give Chris a call, or drop him an email and he will get one to you.
Many of you will remember that a few
months back Kevin, Draper & Chris had a good time teaching a leather
working class at
For Christmas at the Village, on Dec. 6 from 2-8:30 p.m., again we are
looking at 2000 or more participants. The Village is decorated for a 19th
century holiday: horse-drawn carriage rides, music by our orchestra and
singers, there are craft demonstrations and we have a German Marketplace set up
so visitors can buy handmade crafts directly from the craftsmen. Would
your folks wish to demonstrate and sell their pieces during this event.
Let me know what you think, guys, we would love to have you join us.
Demonstration space is limited, as you may recall, so I would want to
reserve a spot for you sooner rather than later
Dave was going to see if anyone from the North East Leather Guild would like to join us in this venture. If you are interested in participating, please let Kevin know ASAP.
And last, but certainly not least, YOUR GUILD NEEDS YOUR HELP! After years of sharing his time, talents and humor with us, Gary Draper is retiring from our guild so that he can spend more time with one of his other passions: photography. Draper will be greatly missed at each meeting and special event we attend, but his absence will be felt profoundly as he has been our guild Secretary for years, and thus has been the one to put together and send out the newsletter each month. We desperately need someone to fill the big shoes that Draper is leaving. Now we know that not everyone is computer savvy, but if you are willing to learn some simple steps used to put a newsletter together, Chris, Johanna and Draper will come to your house and show you how to use your computer to do this. And if you aren’t hooked up to the Internet or don’t even own a computer but would still like to help, we need someone who would be willing to make copies of the newsletter and mail them each month.
Not many of us can make it to every meeting, which makes the information in the newsletter all that more important. Even if you have never done anything like this before, PLEASE consider doing this for the benefit of all of us. Then let Kevin and/or Chris know. Thanks, from all the Pitt Pounders!
Bless You, Chris

HELLO, PITTPOUNDERS,
Happy
Anniversary FROM Leatherworker.net! JUNE, 2008
We're two years
old now, and have more than 2500 members from all over the world sharing
leather projects, patterns, tips and tricks. Our members generously share
what they know and answer questions about saddles to dog collars and everything
in between. You'll find answers to questions about dyes and finishes, leather
tools, how to sharpen knives, and so much more.
If you haven't visited in awhile, check out Beaverslayer's step by step
instructions on how to make a laced vest and hat, view ClayB's detailed figure
carving and embossing lessons (his Bear Paw tutorial and buffalo feathers
presentation are his two newest additions). You can learn about how to shape,
harden and make leather bottles, we have several detailed instructional for
braiding, the skinny on sewing machines and hand stitching, holsters and knife
sheathes, motorcycle gear, how to construct leather armor and masks, making
period pieces, many assorted leather specialties including saddles and tack, and
a variety of other information that leatherworkers have taken the time to
explain and photograph. The Show Off section is chock full of projects
recently completed by our members. There is an NSFW section available by
request for the leatherworkers who specialize in adult themed leatherwork. (We
keep the main board "family friendly".) LW has photo galleries of
museums, and from all the leather shows- IFoLG and
LW features an
integrated "Live Chat" feature where you can "talk" to
friends in real time. Guilds are also encouraged to hold meetings there, either
public or privately. We are adding videos in the future, and are also compiling
a leather "wiki" style encyclopedia that everyone will be welcome to
add to and use.
We are the
world's largest community of leatherworkers and saddle makers, adhering to our
motto: "Education, Entertainment & Fellowship." We don't charge anyone to participate, and
nothing is "hidden" from people who don't contribute, but donations
are always welcome. All monies received
are used for site expenses and upgrades, and we deeply appreciate those of you
who believe in what we're doing here. Without you, LW wouldn't be
possible.
Thank you all for making LW interesting, informative and fun. It is a pleasure to serve the leatherworkers of the world, so please keep your suggestions for improvments and additions coming so that we may continue to provide you with the quality content you have come to expect from the greatest leatherworking site on the 'net. We have something for everyone, so whether you are an experienced old hand or new to the art, chime in and enjoy yourself. LW welcomes you all, and we are glad that our members make this such a special place to be.
Best regards, the LW staff:
