Pitt Pounders Leather Guild

THE POUNDER

January 2009

Happy New Year! It seems hard to believe that it is 2009 already! And another Holiday Season has come and gone. I trust they were enjoyable for everyone. So did you get any new tools or supplies for Christmas? What about making any New Years Resolutions concerning your leather working? Like maybe doing more of it? Or attending more of the guild meeting this year? Or making it to one of the shows this year? How about entering the competition at the shows? All of those would be great resolutions. And we want you to know that the Pitt Pounders will do all that we can to help you attain these. If you need help or have questions, just ask. Together we can learn & share and get better, and have fun the whole time!

So the plan for our January meeting is this: If you can, please bring some finger food/snacks to share, along with anything you have made lately or are working on, and all of the tools and leather you need to start and/or continue the chipmunk.  First we will spend some time getting caught up with everyone while we enjoy the refreshments. We’ll also spend some time talking about what we will be doing as a guild this year. Things like what projects and/or techniques we would like to learn at our monthly meetings, the upcoming show schedule, who we would like to bring in to teach a class, and what outside activities we may want to get involved with this year. Then we will start/continue working on the chipmunk. Sounds good doesn’t it? It will be even better if you join us!

The chipmunk. The whole purpose of doing this project is to learn and practice realistic figure carving. You may or may not ever use this pattern again, but the techniques you learn and/or improve will enable you to complete many types of subjects in the future. Included in this newsletter is the pattern for the chipmunk. I debated whether or not to include the pattern because there are certain techniques that are better explained and demonstrated in person. But then I realized that much of the fun & challenge of working with leather is figuring out just how to do things on your own, and finding new uses for your tools, ect..

Next meeting:

January 18, 2009

Meeting Place:

Harmony-Zelienople United Methodist Church

123 N. Pittsburgh Street

Zelienople, PA 16063

What to bring:

Finger food/snacks to share. Swivel knife, strop, tracing film, pencil, stylus, 4/5 oz or heavier leather aprox. 5X7, mallet, bevellers, including your pointed bevellers, pear shaders, matting tools and tooling surface

So here is the pattern. It is a combination of two pictures I found on the Internet. And when Paul Burnett was here for his class he was kind enough to touch it up for us. Just be aware that not all of the interior solid lines are to be cut.

Canceled Meetings

If our meeting was scheduled a week earlier there is no way that we would have had it. We hope that we don’t have to cancel any meeting due to weather. But because so many have to drive a good distance to attend each meeting, we will not take any chances when the roads could get bad. If they are calling for bad weather and you aren’t sure if the meeting will be canceled or not, first check your email to see if we sent out a notice, then call me, Chris, at the number listed on the front, or give Joyce Wedge a call at 724-538-5853.
